Route description MTB
The xTerra Finland 2017 cycling route consists of a track of approximately 10km that is rotated one or more times depending on the series. The route will be familiar to the Basecamp triathlon visitors of the previous year and is also part of the Imatra MTB race route.
The race starts from the transition area via the service road of Holiday Club Saimaa (the race center), up to the cycle path parallel to the Tiuruniementie road. From the cycle path the route turns into the terrain. This cycle path along Tiuruniementie acts as a garbage area.
At the beginning of the trail there are a few kilometers of easy and wide open-air routes. After crossing the Rauhan Aseman tie road, you pass to the coolest part of the route – a narrower single track. Part of the route goes on a broader ATV track and again to the trails along spectacular Ice Age eskers. The end of the route to the transition area or a new lap is driven on a good paved cycle path.
The route is not technically demanding and can be run on a basic mountain bike. The route, however, represents a modern mountain biking route. It is, therefore, a good idea for new mountain bikers to study the concept of wet roots and stones…
The track designer’s recommendation: Rigid or short-spring full suspension mountain bike with 29 “discs. The best choice for wheels are well rolling but tubeless ones with a large airspace.
Route description run
The XTERRA Finland 2017 running route has been rebuilt with a fair hand since the previous Basecamp triathlon races. The length of the trail is about 5 km and you run it once or twice, depending on the series.
The route enters the forest immediately after the transition area and the very first hill will tame the biggest hurry, if you have possibly saved some energy after the cycling. After the initial shock, the next stage will be a bit easier, followed by a wet part. Another tough rise will come soon enough and before the middle of the round, you will find yourself running through a nice boreal forest. Halfway through the circuit, you can visit the organizer’s service area. The final part is run on a harder surface, but seasoned with a few bumps. This last section may have obstructions and / or undercuts.
Track designer’s recommendation: Tie you shoelaces well!
